MEDAS ISLANDS

MEDAS ISLANDS

The Medas Islands make up an archipelago that is very well known to divers in the western Mediterranean. This set of small, uninhabited, limestone islands close to the coast are of great interest visually. But they also offer an exceptional sub-aquatic biological wealth that has been protected now for some years.

There are three important reasons why the Medas Islands are so popular with diving fans. First, there is an abundance of fish which, because it is a nature reserve, are not frightened by humans. The second reason is that the wearing down of the limestone has created numerous tunnels and gaps in the islands, some of which can be used by divers. Thirdly, being less than a nautical mile from the coast, means that they are easily accessible.

Among the different dives that can be made on the archipelago is the "Tascó petit", which goes no deeper than 20-25 metres and is particularly appealing because you can observe species of fish, such as groupers, that are normally very shy.  Some of these reach quite considerable sizes.
