This citadel was built at the beginning of the 11th century, occupying the extreme east of the city's protective walls. It has been considered to be one of Spain's most important military constructions from that period. Access to this stronghold is via Calle Alcazabilla which zigzags between the high walls and through a series of open arches supported by genuine Roman columns extracted from the ruins of the neighbouring old Roman theatre.
