The Castle occupies a large area on top of the hill of the same name, which is where there stood a lighthouse built by the Phoenicians, according to the Muslim chronicles. It was named Yabal-Faruk, ("Lighthouse Mount"), from which the name Gibralfaro comes.
This fortress was built in the first half of the 15th century by the Muslim king Yusuf and was conquered in 1487 by the Catholic Monarchs.
